Local police have launched an investigation into a video depicting child pornography that is making the rounds on social media.
The one-minute video shows a young girl, apparently no more than eight years old, being coerced to perform oral sex on an adult male. It has triggered shock and anger across the Island, with people calling for the authorities to leave 'no stone unturned' in their search to capture the perpetrator.
The corporate communications arm of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, in a news release on Wednesday evening, said the police - including detectives from the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA) - are aware of the disturbing video and are currently carrying out investigations to determine its origin.
The release also warned the public to desist from sharing the video "as this action constitutes an offence under the Child Pornography (Prevention) Act and the Cyber Crimes Act.
"There is also a strong possibility that sharing the video can result in further trauma to the child," the release said, adding that members of the public are strongly urged to delete the video.
Jamaican sentenced to more than 5 years in US prison for child porn
A Jamaican man, who was caught with child pornography on arrival on a flight at Orlando International Airport in Florida, USA earlier this year, was sentenced to five years and eight months in US federal prison for transporting and possessing child pornography.
The sentence was handed down on Anthony Carl Spence, 45, on Thursday. He was found guilty by a federal jury on July 26, 2017.
Evidence in court indicated that on February 6, Spence arrived at Orlando International Airport from Jamaica with a smart phone.
During a routine border search of the phone, agents located a video on the instrument depicting a man sexually abusing a toddler.
Law enforcement agents later located a second video on the phone depicting a child of between seven and nine years old, engaging in sexually-explicit conduct.
During an interview with law enforcement officers, Spence reportedly admitted that he had shared the videos with persons in Jamaica, but claimed that he thought he had deleted the videos before he headed to the US.
"This predator was discovered as he entered our country," said HSI Tampa Special Agent in Charge James C. Spero.
"HSI special agents and our US Customs and Border Protection partners will continue to use our border search authorities to keep our citizens safe."
